Expression Pattern :

Pattern  In all larval and adult stages stained cells are intestinal with some variation in the staining pattern between stages. Thus, in all stages, paired nuclei posterior to the pharyngealintestinal valve are stained and either paired or single nuclei along the length of the intestine. In adult worms, three paired rectal nuclei are stained which are not all seen in larval stages. That stained nuclei are in intestinal cells is indicated by distribution, size, shape and topology. Whereas LAP-1-lacZ transgenes are expressed along the length of the gut but not in the buccal cavity or pharynx, Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Tests using an antiserum specific for the protein show staining most intensely in the buccal cavity and rectal epithelium with staining also along the lining of the posterior pharyngeal bulb and in the in the anterior gut. Primary Identifier  Expr889
Remark  This staining pattern was seen in all stages of wild type nematodes and was absent in deletion mutants and using pre-immune sera. Subcellular Localization  nuclei

Definition Name Synonym Primary Identifier
A chain of very large cuboidal cells forming a wide central lumen in which food arrives from the posterior pharynx, is digested, and from which waste products proceed to the rectum. Intestinal rings form in groups of two and four cells surrounding the common lumen; thus the epithelium is only one cell deep at any point, with neighboring cells firmly secured to their neighbors by apical adherens junctions. These cells have very large nuclei and many large vacuoles, yolk granules, and other inclusions; the latter increase in number and electron density as the animal ages. intestine gut WBbt:0005772
the feeding organ, a neuro-muscular pump in the head of the animal, used to ingest food, bacteria suspended in liquid, filter them out, grind them up and transport posteriorly into the instestine. pharynx esophagus WBbt:0003681
