Intermine data mining platform for C. elegans and related nematodes

Expression Pattern :

Pattern  The major location of the cadmium inducible metallothionein expression was strictly confined to the intestine, mtl-1 was constituently expressed, even in the absence of cadmium, in the second pharyngeal bulb. Primary Identifier  Expr3078
Remark  The GFP signal could be turned on by exposing nematodes to metals. The overall response characteristics mirrored the data obtained from the semi-quantitative PCR, namely the minimum response concentration was 2.5 M cadmium over a 24 hour exposure period and, as before, copper and zinc were poor inducers. Short-term exposures of one hour required a cadmium concentration in excess of 20 M to initiate a strong positive GFP signal. Although there was no observable isoform specific divergence in signal intensity, dose or time response, the cellular localisation differed to some extent.

Definition Name Synonym Primary Identifier
A chain of very large cuboidal cells forming a wide central lumen in which food arrives from the posterior pharynx, is digested, and from which waste products proceed to the rectum. Intestinal rings form in groups of two and four cells surrounding the common lumen; thus the epithelium is only one cell deep at any point, with neighboring cells firmly secured to their neighbors by apical adherens junctions. These cells have very large nuclei and many large vacuoles, yolk granules, and other inclusions; the latter increase in number and electron density as the animal ages. intestine gut WBbt:0005772
